On Saturday, February 23rd, Bellator will be live from the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland, for Bellator 217: Gallagher vs Graham. This event is headlined with a bantamweight battle as Ireland’s James Gallagher takes on Steven Graham. The main card features four fights which will air on Paramount Network beginning at 9 PM ET. In total, the event has 17 scheduled fights with the entire 13-fight preliminary card being untelevised. We’ll provide you with our picks and betting value here.

Bellator makes their first trip overseas in 2019, and it happens to be the same weekend that the UFC makes their first appearance in Czechoslovakia. On paper, the UFC has a stronger card. However, as we’ve seen before with Bellator, it’s the action inside the cage that matters the most.

Bellator 217 Main Card Fights

The main card of the night features four fights and will air on Paramount Network beginning at 9 PM ET. All MMA betting odds are courtesy of 5Dimes:

James Gallagher (-510) vs Steven Graham (+340)

Ever since James Gallagher (7-1) signed with Bellator, the promotion has been pushing him as one of their top young prospects. At just 22 years old, Gallagher was 3-0 when he joined Bellator in July 2016. “The Strabanimal” would win his first four fights under the Bellator banner and get the full hype treatment. Unfortunately, that hype was derailed last August when Gallagher was knocked out in the 1st round of his fight against Ricky Bandejas. Nevertheless, Bellator still thought highly enough of Gallagher to put him in the main event of a card in his home country.

Steven Graham (5-3) comes into this fight having won four straight contests. It was a remarkable turnaround after he lost three in a row all via TKO. Graham is making his Bellator debut, and it’s coming in hostile territory. Four of Graham’s five wins have come via submission, which means he’s comfortable going to the mat where Gallagher will most likely take the fight.

After being treated to a handful of notable main event fights from Bellator these last few months, this main event fight is rather lackluster. In fact, the whole card is underwhelming on paper. With that said, I expect Gallagher to do his best in putting on a show for his fellow countrymen. It will be a disaster for Bellator if Gallagher loses again, especially to someone nobody has heard of before. There’s no betting value on Gallagher, and Graham isn’t even worth a flier.

Peter Queally (-460) vs Myles Price (+320)

The co-main event of the night is a lightweight contest featuring two Irish fighters in what locals have dubbed “the biggest domestic fight” in Irish MMA history. Neither fighter has competed in Bellator before this event. So, it shouldn’t be a surprise if most MMA fans outside of Ireland don’t know who these two fellas are.

The Irish media and fans have done an admirable job hyping up this bout as a bitter feud between two fighters that used to train at the same gym. Price ended up leaving and joining AKA Gym, the same gym as Khabib Nurmagomedov who might just be public enemy #1 in Ireland.

Peter Queally (11-4-1) comes into this contest with the better record, better nickname, and better betting odds. Queally, aka “The Showstopper,“ should probably be dubbed “Mr. Scorecard” instead. 10 of Queally’s 11 wins have come via decision. And, all four of his losses have come via decision. He’s never been stopped before in his career. Queally has been very outspoken about his opponent and wants to win this fight for Ireland:

“Myles, an Irishman and former team-mate, spent his own money to fly thousands of miles to help Khabib prepare to beat Conor. He is a rat. The only thing worse is being a rat that betrayed his country. This next one is for all of us. The fans will get exactly what they want, a victory for The Showstopper and for Ireland.”

Myles Price (10-7) is coming off a loss in his last fight via Unanimous Decision. For his career, Price has five wins via decision and four losses via decision. However, unlike his opponent, Price does have three losses via submission. Price being labeled a “rat” and a “traitor” probably won’t sit well with the rabid Irish crowd. Price had the following comments in response to Queally’s insults:

“I had already booked to go over to AKA before any match up had been confirmed. How can I be called a ‘traitor’ or ‘rat’ if I am just trying to better myself by going to the best in the world to wrestle with high level guys?”

Based on their careers, and the recent bad blood, I don’t see either fighter losing via KO/TKO. Most likely, this fight is going the distance. Combined, these two fighters have seen the scorecards 23 times. Let’s make it 24 this weekend. These odds are so high that there’s no value with Queally. However, Price is worth a flier as a big underdog. The smart bet is with Queally, so play it safe on this one.

Richie Smullen (-350) vs Adam Gustab (+250)

Record3-1-13-3

In this battle of Ireland vs Poland, Richie Smullen (3-1-1) takes on Adam Gustab (3-2) in a featherweight fight.

Smullen is looking to get his first win in almost two years. He lost at TUF 27 last July and had a Draw in July 2017. Smullen is from Ireland and trains at SBG like most of the other Irish fighters on this card. Smullen needs to show more technical skills in this bout than he did last year at TUF 27 when he was choked out. Fortunately for Richie, he’s fighting someone with lesser MMA skills than Luis Pena.

Adam Gustab comes into this fight having lost three of four including his last two bouts. Gustab has been stopped in all three of his losses and hasn’t faced the caliber of fighters that Smullen has. Gustab has some offensive firepower but really lacks in the defensive department.

Smullen is the betting favorite, and for good reason. He’s clearly the better fighter and was set up nicely by Bellator with a very winnable fight. I expect Smullen to get this fight to the mat and either finish Gustab via submission or TKO.

Charlie Ward (N/A) vs Jamie Stephenson (N/A)

Here we have another SBG fighter with a very winnable matchup. The embattled Charlie Ward (5-3) from Ireland, takes on Jamie Stephenson (4-2) from England.

Charlie Ward is the more notable fighter of the two. He’s a former UFC competitor that lost both of his fights via 1st round TKO. He left for Bellator where he’s gone 2-0 and should get his 3rd win this weekend. Sadly, Ward is best known for being involved in a fight with Joao Carvalho in 2016 where Carvalho died from injuries suffered in their fight. It sparked outrage in Ireland over the safety of the sport.

Stephenson has lost two of his last three fights. However, he hasn’t fought since September 2017. Jamie only has six pro fights, and five of them came from 2012 to 2014.

In other words, this is nothing more than a glorified sparring session. It’s why MMA betting sites don’t have betting odds for this fight. It’s going to be a one-sided affair where Ward dominates and wins via TKO in the 1st round. Maybe we’ll see Conor McGregor in his corner. That will probably be the highlight of this fight.

Final Thoughts on Bellator 217

Bellator should rename this fight event to “Bellator 217: Team SBG Ireland.” All of the main card Irish fighters train out of SBG Ireland. And, all of them pretty much have very winnable fights. The main event isn’t even going to be a contest as Gallagher is a better fighter, so there’s really not betting value there. Queally has the toughest draw on the main card going up against a former teammate in what should be an intense bout. That fight actually has more intrigue than any other fight on the entire Bellator 217 card. Smullen and Ward both have glorified sparring sessions.

The prelim card appears to have more talent and competitive fights than the main card. I’m a bit surprised that SBG Ireland’s Kiefer Crosbie didn’t make the cut for the main card portion of the night. At least he’s fought in Bellator before. With all of these European fighters and prospects, hopefully we’ll see some excitement inside the cage. Thankfully, this event airs after UFC Fight Night 145, which will be in Czechoslovakia on the same day.
